Grease Traps

Grease trap (grease interceptor/fat trap) systems prevent fat, oil, and grease (FOG) entering your drainage system and our waterways. This food waste cannot be processed properly by sewage treatment plants and septic tanks and will cause a blockage in your drains and pipes if it enters.

In normal households we avoid putting food waste down our sinks, instead, we dispose of them elsewhere. In commercial settings, this is not as simple and many blockages of FOG often occur. Importantly, the Environmental Agency can prosecute if there is not a suitable grease trap installed.

Grease traps work by cooling warm or hot greasy water. By allowing the FOG to cool, it enables separation of the different layers of waste. FOG are lighter in density, therefore they float at the surface of tanks and become trapped, the cooled water then continues to drain into the sewer with FOG.

Generally, in order to run efficiently, grease traps should be emptied when the sludge level reaches around 25% of the tank level. Once it has reached this level, the trap will not work properly. This will increase the chances of the failure symptoms below as the waste will begin to escape into the sewage system, contaminating watercourses and the increasing the possibility of prosecution.

Assuming your grease trap is the correct size, it will need to be emptied between every 1-3 months. If it fills up quicker than this, you may not have the right size installed and will need to consider upgrading your trap.

Failure symptoms:

  • Foul odours in your kitchen/around tanks.

  • Slow draining water in the property.

  • Wastewater backing up into the drains in the property.
