2020 Regulations

New rules: septic tanks & small sewage treatment plants

2020 Regulations:

In 2015 the government introduced new rules for sewage treatment systems. The rules are designed to reduce the level of pollution from sewage and to improve the quality of water that flows into local watercourses such as a river or stream.

Septic tanks that discharge into surface water such as a stream, river, drain, canal or any other type of watercourse must be upgraded or replaced by 1 January 2020, or if you sell your property before that date. If your current septic tank discharges into a watercourse, you will have to replace or upgrade it to avoid a fine (up to £250k).
